Adam Gilchrist is an Australian cricket commentator and former professional cricketer who is widely acknowledged as one of the greatest wicket-keeper batsmen to have graced the sport. Credited with redefining the role of the wicketkeeper-batsman in the modern era, he represented Australia in 96 test matches, scoring 5,570 runs and recording 416 dismissals with the gloves. A key member of the world-beating Australian team in the late 1990s and most of the 2010s, he was a superstar in the ODI format as well, scoring 9,619 runs in 287 matches and claiming 472 dismissals. As of April 2021, he was one of just 3 cricketers, all Australian, to have won the ICC Cricket World Cup thrice (1999, 2003, 2007).

Adam Gilchrist Facts

Adam holds the record of being the first player to have hit 100 sixes in test cricket.

During his illustrious career, he competed in the ICC Cricket World Cup thrice (1999, 2003, 2007) and amazingly, won the title each time. Even more incredible was the fact that he scored at least 50 runs in the final of each of those tournaments.

In 2010, he was made a ‘Member of the Order of Australia’ in recognition of his services to cricket.

In 2013, he was inducted into the ‘ICC (International Cricket Council) Hall of Fame’.

In the twilight of his career, he also played in 13 T20I matches for Australia, as the format was finding its feet in international cricket. For most of his international career, he had served as Australia’s vice-captain across formats.

On the domestic front, he had represented New South Wales (1992-93–1993-94) and Western Australia (1994-95–2007-08) in Australia; and Middlesex County Cricket Club (2010) in England.

He had retired from all 3 international formats in early 2008 but had continued to play franchise cricket until 2013 in the IPL (Indian Premier League) representing Deccan Chargers (2008–2010) and Kings XI Punjab (2011–2013). He had captained the former team to the title win in 2009 and was also adjudged the ‘Player of the Series’ that season (495 runs, 18 dismissals).

In 2021, he was named an ‘Australian Legend of Cricket’, as part of the annual series of commemorative postage stamps that have been issued by Australia Post since 1997.
