Shonda Lynn Rhimes was born on November 13, 1970 to Vera and Ille Rhimes Jr in Chicago, Illinois. She was the youngest of a family of six children. Her father was a college professor while her mother was a college administrator.
Her mother, Vera attended college so at the same time she was raising all her children and getting a doctorate. His father later became the main information office at the University of Southern California. She lived in Park Forest South, Illinois with her parents and siblings.
From a young age, she displayed an affinity for storytelling. She volunteered at a hospital in high school, which sparked her interest in the hospital setting. She attended Marian Catholic High School in Illinois and then Dartmouth College, where she majored in English and Film Studies.
During her studies, she joined the Black Underground Theater Association, which allowed her to divide her time between directing, performing and writing. She graduated from Dartmouth in 1991.
After college, she moved to San Francisco and started working at McCann Erickson, a global advertising agency. Soon after, she moved to Los Angeles and began studying screenwriting at the University of Southern California, where she topped her class, earning her the Gary Rosenberg Writing Fellowship.
