The fear of a 10-year-old who was wounded in Maine shooting: Am I going to live?

The facts surrounding mass shootings never get easier to stomach, no matter how many times they seem to occur in the United States of America, and there has been an outpouring of emotion in Maine following Wednesday's events.

Officials in Maine have said that 18 people were killed in the mass shooting, with a further 13 wounded as a gunman went on a rampage through a commercial district in Lewiston, Maine, on Wednesday evening.

It has been revealed that one of the wounded from the attack at a bowling alley and a bar was a 10-year-old girl.

The Just-in-Time Recreation bowling alley was hosting a youth league event at the time of the shooting, meaning lots of children were in danger.

One of them was Zoey Hutchinson, who was grazed by a bullet as she and her mother took cover at the bowling alley on Wednesday evening.

Reflecting on the horror of the mass shooting, Zoey Hutchinson expressed her surprise and shock.

"I never thought I'd grow and get a bullet in my leg," Hutchinson told ABC news.

"Why? Why do people do this?

"I was more worried about, like, am I going to live? Am I going to make it out of here?"

Zoey's mother, Meghan, then took over the interview and explained just what happened to the pair as the shooting began.

"When I turned around, I saw the shooter like right behind me," she confirmed to ABC News.

The mother and daughter were reportedly able to save themselves by barricading themselves in a storage area of the bowling alley with a number of other victims.

Mass shooting is a dark day for Maine

It's clear that the community in Maine has been rocked by this shocking act of violence.

"This attack strikes at the very heart of who we are, and the values we hold dear for this precious place we call home," Maine governor, Janet Mills, declared in a press conference.

"This is a dark day for me."

Robert Card has been named as the suspect, and he remains on the run.
