Vinesh Phogat was born on 25 August 1994. She is an Indian wrestler. She became the first Indian woman wrestler to capture a gold medal at both the Asian and Commonwealth Games. Vinesh is the lone Indian female wrestler to have collected multiple medals at the World Wrestling Championships. 2019 saw Phogat become the first Indian athlete to receive a Laureus World Sports Award nomination.
Phogat comes from a successful wrestling family, and several of her cousins have won medals at the Commonwealth Games and competed internationally. Vinesh is the cousin of wrestlers Geeta and Babita as well as the daughter of wrestler Rajpal Phogat. Both of her cousins took home gold in the 55 kg division at the Commonwealth Games. Her father and uncle faced intense pressure and opposition from the community in their village in the Indian state of Haryana for allowing her, her cousins, and herself to compete in wrestling. They were deemed to be violating the morals and values of their community. Ritu Phogat, Vinesh’s cousin, also competes at the international level and took home the gold medal at the 2016 Commonwealth Wrestling Championship.
She won her first medal (Bronze) at the world championship in 2019. In 2018, she competed in the 50 kg division and won gold at the Asian and Commonwealth Games. In the 53 kg final of the Matteo Pellicone Ranking Series in Rome, the 26-year-old Canadian defeated Diana Mary Helen Weicker 4-0. Phogat finished second in her category at the 2015 Asian Championships in Doha after losing to Yuki Irie of Japan in the final. She qualified for the Olympics by winning the 2016 Rio Olympics qualifying tournament held in Istanbul by defeating Polish wrestler Iwona Matkowska in the final round. At the Rio Olympics, she tore her anterior cruciate ligament, endangering her professional career.
